Mother's Day celebrations are extremely important in the Lower School at Lovett. Both first and third grade students hold special presentations for their mothers, grandmothers, and special friends. This year, Third Graders (in both Spanish and French class) created a flower that describes all the special reasons why they care about their loved one. In the center bud, it states, "I love you because..." in their target language, and each petal is a descriptive word or phrase. Mothers were so excited to hear a special poem and song in both French and Spanish. Click on the video below to hear the song that we sang during the presentation. It was a beautiful day!

"How can I help my child if I don't know how to speak the language?" If I had a nickel for every time I heard a parent ask me this same question, I'd be a millionaire! If you search my site, you will find that I try to provide numerous resources to promote learning outside of the classroom. Currently, I have added an audio component where I have recorded myself pronouncing each vocabulary word. Under each theme, there are videos, flashcards, audio recordings, and songs. A great way to spend time with your child is to go on my website and learn as a family. We play numerous games with our picture flashcards that can be played at home. Have your child be the "el profesor/la profesora" (the teacher) and watch their leadership skills soar! For an extra bonus, make a sticker chart with your child to track your progress! Señora Hoyos
Kindergarten students in Mrs. Swaim's class were so excited when our Mystery Reader came to read to the class! Mrs. Turner brought a whole canvas tote full of books in Spanish to read. One class favorite was about the Tooth Fairy and Ratoncito Perez. Students loved hearing about the cultural differences and personal stories from Mrs. Turner. We know so much more about Venezuela!!
Students loved learning about Dia de los Muertos and enjoyed making masks to celebrate! To learn more about the holiday, click here. If you're like me and love to listen to music, here are some great songs that I think you will enjoy. A wonderful Chilean group, Kevin Karla y La Banda, have taken popular songs heard on the radio and sing them in Spanish. What a great tool to practice the language by singing and dancing! "We Are Never Getting Back Together" Spanish cover with lyrics "Wide Awake" cover in Spanish with lyrics "We Found Love" cover in Spanish with lyrics "Call Me Maybe" cover in Spanish with lyrics I'm always amazed when children take charge of their learning. Instead of Señora Hoyos calling the numbers, a first grade student was randomly selected to be the caller for the game. Being the caller not only helped students practice their number skills, but it also boosted their confidence and self-esteem.
Today we celebrated the birthday of the ant in third grade. Students were so excited to join together with Sra. Fonseca's class to celebrate such a fun occasion. Third Graders honored La Hormiga by making paper ants and snacked on treats. Enjoy photos from our fiesta and a cute little video in honor of La Hormiga. Sra. H It's always interesting to watch when children take charge of their learning. Even though I enjoyed my summer vacation, I am thrilled to start my first year as a Lovett Lower School Spanish teacher. This year, I will teach all of kindergarten, first grade, and one section of third grade with Señora Fonseca. If you have any questions, concerns, or simply want to say hi, please feel free to contact me via e-mail: [email protected] or (404) 262-3032, ext. 1166.
